Our work with Vision Schools Scotland

The Holocaust Educational Trust is proud to be part of the Vision Schools Scotland (VSS) project. Working in partnership with the University of the West of Scotland, the Trust will provide Career-long Professional Learning (CLPL) opportunities to schools across Scotland.

We welcome applications from teachers engaging in VSS on our residential CLPL courses, we are also pleased to offer free in-school CLPL.

There is no charge for teachers attending any of our residential programmes. Teachers undertaking these courses are required to pay their own travel (for example to Amsterdam, Leicester, Berlin or Tel Aviv), other costs are subsidised by the Holocaust Educational Trust.

Our bespoke in-school teacher training workshops/CLPL sessions are delivered free of charge, we only ask institutions to cover travel (and where necessary accommodation) for an Education Officer to come out from London.

The Trust organises a range of CLPL courses for teachers each year including our Exploring the Holocaust UK Residential Course, Teacher Study Visits and our Annual Teacher Training Course at Yad Vashem.

We also offer free online and in-person Teacher Study Seminars which engage with historical topics and the pedagogy of teaching about the Holocaust, and one-day historical walking tours across the UK.

Our 2024-25 Educational Programmes for Teachers brochure and calendar are now available. Please help us to spread the word and share with colleagues and networks you think might be interested.

Our Exploring the Holocaust UK Residential Course is aimed at all teachers exploring the Holocaust in their schools. This course serves as the first step in our educational programme and is designed for teachers from all subjects to advance subject knowledge and inform classroom practice. We particularly welcome applications from teachers who are committed to the development of cross-curricular educational opportunities within their schools, and welcome participation from more than one teacher from each school. Our 2025 course will take place in Leicester from Friday 14 February (from 7pm) to Tuesday 18 February 2025, to apply please click here.

Our Teacher Study Visits aim to build on the discussions raised at our Exploring the Holocaust UK Residential Course, furthering subject knowledge through site-based learning. As experts in authentic site-based education, our programme aims to encourage the development of site specific knowledge, alongside critical exploration of the role of site-based visits within Holocaust education. Our 2025-25 academic programme includes Teacher Study Visits to Amsterdam (Thursday 31 October to Sunday 3 November 2024) and Berlin (Sunday 25 May to Wednesday 28 May 2025)

Our Annual Teacher Training Course at Yad Vashem is our most advanced course. Many of those who undertake our Exploring the Holocaust UK Residential progress to complete our course at Yad Vashem. The programme is composed of a one-day introductory seminar, a 10-day visit to Yad Vashem in Israel and a follow-up weekend. Yad Vashem is a world leader for research into Holocaust education, commemorative practice and historical knowledge. Alongside sessions in the museum and memorial complex, teachers will additionally benefit from the educational resources offered by the Yad Vashem International School for Holocaust Studies in Jerusalem. The course gives teachers the opportunity to hear from leading Holocaust academics, allows for reflection on current classroom practice, and showcases lesson resources.
